Autumn in Newport, Rhode Island

Autumn in Newport, Rhode Island

We love going to Newport in the Fall. A mix of fall foliage along the shoreline mixed with cooler sunny days makes for a perfect setting. The town is calm and charming, like the sailboats bobbing on the bay.

A wonderful hotel, with beautiful rooms, views, decor, and location is the Brenton.  This photo was taken from the hotel window as the morning mist on the bay steamed off, as the sunshine and blue sky offered us a beautiful November day.

In the morning, we walked next door to the Save the Bay's Hamilton Family Aquarium. This aquarium is small but so much fun with a lot of touch opportunities and an amazing interactive learning experience about sea life within the Narragansett Bay. Save The Bay is a 100% member-supported nonprofit organization, with a mission to protect and improve Narragansett Bay. We spent an hour enjoying this amazing aquarium.

In the afternoon we walked up the charming cobblestone streets to the gilded-age style Vanderbilt Hotel for a delicious lunch. They have a great pool table and a variety of spaces to explore or sit for tea, or a cocktail.

Next, we walked to some of the shops on the water including Bellevue Kids, which is a fun place to get something special for the kids. Then, while looking for some art for our new home, we stumbled upon a precious store that we will always return to while in Newport... Anne Hall Antique Prints. I found three small circa 1800 prints that I can't wait to frame!

We have had so many great experiences in Newport, but one that keeps us coming back every time is the exquisite natural beauty of the Cliff Walk. Reminiscent of a coastline in Italy as Beettie Bearden Pardee describes in her beautiful book (I found in our hotel lobby), Private Newport (#ad). Evergreens protrude over rock as the ocean crashes below, creating an enchanting view, with a long winding trail to walk along the cliff edge... one of the most special spots on the East Coast.

Dinner in Newport?... that is the question! Across from the Brenton is one of the best pizza places called Mother. Really, one of the very best! (and I am from Manhattan) There is also an amazing Mexican spot called Perro Salado, we go to every time we visit. Another favorite restaurant of all time is Giusto (Mother Pizzas, well... Mother Restaurant). It is slightly more upscale, but not overly fancy and it's still great for kids. Another notable spot we love is Bar Cino.

The next morning, before heading home, we drove through the town, filled with our memories of a great trip, and up the hill near the Newport Mansions to Cru Cafe, our favorite breakfast spot. Omelets, French Toast Sticks for kids, delicious pastry... a great morning to remember.

These are our Newport, "Rise in the East" favorites from early November. We will be back for more! We love you Newport, RI! See you next time!
